Customer Reviews
PROS: It was easy to download free ebooks and upload to the Delstar Reader. Some were .txt and others were .pdf. I liked the simple styling and not having too many buttons/keys to confuse a first-time eBook Reader user.
CONS: No bookmark option, No color or font choices, Manual indicates bookmark, Two menu options missing, Color photos but bw text.
I bought the Delstar DS1006 “OpenBook” E-Reader at Walgreens - I wanted to be able to read in bed at night without disturbing my wife while I read - with the Color Screen I was able to do this unlike any other reader I looked at in the stores. I have found many eBooks that are not DRM protected and am very pleased with this unit. I also was presently surprised to see the record feature where I could make audio recordings - This is a nice feature. I have pictures of my grandson and my kids stored on it along with some music I like to listen too when I read –For me this was an experiment to see if I could get away from traditional books and use an eReader, so I did not want to invest hundreds of dollars to see if I would use this new technology. Io my amazement it is very easy to use and pleasant to read. This is a very nice unit for the price. If I were to do over I would have bought the DS1005 in black it looks more manly than the white, however my wife likes looks of the white.
PROS: Many free ebooks and easy to download
I bought 3 and at first had trouble getting ebooks to open.Called Destar support and they said there was a update
Delstar tec was very helpful and show me how to update
CONS:No bookmark option, No font choices as menu indicates,Also no choice of flash or SD card options for ebooks
Thank you for the firmware update. The instructions weren’t clear to me, but I finally got everything updated. Now I can view .pdf and .doc files as well as the .txt and .jpg. The zoom feature has 5 options now - great idea! Bookmark options are there now, and I like the choices. I can’t get the Flip Time feature to work (to turn page in 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds).
Nice device - I just received mine - Are there plans to allow it to read LRF or LIT files in a future Firmware update? I have 1000’s of each -
I have been playing with mine for the last few days. I’ve discovered that TXT displays perfectly if ‘dressed neatly’. I did this as a matter of course for my previous ebooks, so that was no bother. 5 levels of magnification work well, but the text does not necessarily receive reflow treatment. HTML is opened, but the format is off, with sentences broken. Doc files are also opened, albeit slowly, and are displayed in the smallest txt size. If you use magnification, you should also change to landscape view. PDF’s are also displayed, although again too small a print to read, and must be ‘landscaped’. Magnification does not always help.
There is now a bookmark tab available, and yes, Gloria, MP-3’s work, and the headphone sound is good!!
So…bottom line?
The Delstar reader has good sound, good bmp displays, offers excellent txt display ( IF you pre-format the etxt…) it does display the other advertised formats as well.
If you want to view PDFs, I would advise you to go elsewhere. If you know how to re-format Epub’s and other formats, it will do well with them. ( I don’t know how reformat page breaks etc. except in txt).
My opinion is colored by previous experience. I have been reformatting into the .imp format for the EBwise 1150, and the REB 1200. Now, all I have to do is reformat in txt, and I’m home free!!!
The deal maker though, is my wife, and her mom….they really like it, and want one for themselves.
I’ll happily use it until my Augen ‘The Book’ gets here, or until I can lay my hands on a Pandigital NOvel. Even then, this little gem won’t be far away from the rest of my e-readers!
